Day 1: Arrive in the Land of Fire and Ice
Approximate Distance: 100 km / 62 miles, with Reykjanes Peninsula 130 km / 81 miles
Once you have landed at Keflavik Airport, please pick up your luggage and head through customs. Collect your rental car at the airport and proceed to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time in Iceland, we suggest that you take some time to explore the Reykjanes Peninsula (a UNESCO GeoPark site) before you head to Reykjavik.
Reykjanes is a great introduction to Iceland's unique geology and volcanoes and the site of Iceland's 2021, 2022 and 2023 eruptions. You will see unusual and stunning features around the peninsula, including craters, lava cliffs, and fissures. We recommend a stroll in the surreal Gunnuhver area where you can view quirky colorful mud pools and steam vents bubbling away.
Reykjanes is also home to the renowned Blue Lagoon, and you might enjoy the chance to relax in the soothing azure waters. Important: Admission to the Blue Lagoon needs to be booked in advance. We can help you with that!
Drive along the southern coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula to the charming village of Hveragerdi for your overnight. This village is one of the few sites in the world located directly on top of a geothermal area and, because of its many greenhouses heated by hot water from nearby springs, it is often called the "flower village." There are plenty of outdoor and wellness activities to enjoy here, and several restaurants with a unique local focus.
Overnight in Hveragerdi.
Please note check-in for most hotels begins at 14:00 - 16:00 (2:00pm-4:00pm).

Hveragerdi, Iceland, offers walking trails, health spas and an opportunity to see vegetables and fruit growing in greenhouses heated by geothermal water. It's a nice place to relax.
Located 30 mi/45 km southeast of Reykjavik, the town is a popular stopover for buses taking visitors on day trips, so there are tacky souvenir shops in town. However, it's easy to escape the kitsch and hike the nearby trails, where you will find a geothermal stream trickling through the mountains. It's the perfect temperature for bathing.
The thermal activity brings a lively abundance of flowers in the spring and summer. In late June, the town plays host to a flower exhibition that attracts thousands of visitors. If you're there for a day or two, be sure to stop by the swimming pool at Laugaskard, a low-key structure with hot pots, steam baths and sunlamps.
In 2008, a 6.3-level earthquake struck Iceland just 1 mi/2 km southeast of the town. At the tourist information center, you can see and walk over a glass-covered fissure where the earth opened up. There is also an earthquake simulator where visitors can experience firsthand how a 6-plus-level earthquake feels.
Hveragerdi is easily accessible by car or by bus from Reykjavik's Mjodd bus terminal.

In the southwest corner of Iceland is the Reykjanes peninsula, less than 1-hour drive from the capital or 20-minute drive from Keflavik International Airport.
There the Mid-Atlantic Ridge comes ashore. The nature is magnificent. Various volcanic formations are found on Reykjanes Peninsula, such as mountains and hills chiefly made of volcanic tuff, large and small lava flows plus different types of volcanoes and volcanic edifices. The Reykjanes peninsula volcanic zone is a direct continuance of the North Atlantic Ridge that surfaces from the ocean at Reykjanes, and it is home to many important geological formations, some of which are utterly unique, including numerous types of volcanoes, naturally carved pools, craters, and geothermal pools.
Few things are cozier than relaxing in a hot pool in the middle of nature. Iceland has an abundance of easily accessible natural pools, but it is perhaps the Blue Lagoon the most spectacular of them all.
The Blue Lagoon was founded in 1992. Its specialty is the geothermal sea, which is two thirds of salt water and one third of fresh water. It is rich in minerals, silica, and algae, which is the basis of all skin products in the Blue Lagoon.

The south side of Vatnajökull is characterized by many high, majestic mountain ridges, with outlet glaciers descending between them onto the lowlands. Sheltered by the high ice, the vegetated oasis of Skaftafell overlooks the black sands deposited to its west by the river Skeiðará.

Reykjavik Walking tour – 3,5 hours
Reykjavík is a city of bold contrasts. The capital of Iceland is small but cosmopolitan and small-town; vibrant and sophisticated; young-at-heart and yet full of history. In this tour you will walk around the city and discover the main sights.
Together with your local guide, you will pass by the Hallgímskirkja church, the highest and probably most iconic building in town, as well as the Dome Church, which is Reykjavik’s Lutheran Cathedral and the bishop’s place in Iceland. The Dome Church is located downtown, next to the Alþingi, house of parliament.
You will see other emblematic sites like the “Sun Voyager” sculpture created by Icelandic sculptor Jon Gunnar Arnason. This gleaming steel sculpture is located on Reykjavik’s splendid waterfront and resembles a Viking long-ship, the ‘Solfar’ or ‘Sun Voyager.’ You will also see the modern building Harpa, a cultural and social centre in the heart of the city, and the Old Harbour.

The lake is a national conservation area because of its geological features and many species of ducks. Heavy volcanic activity in the region has made this a hot spot for visitors looking for a thermal mud bath. The area is very diverse, ranging from hot thermal springs to mud pits, to barren lava fields.
Vik, Iceland, 120 mi/190 km southeast of Reykjavik, is near the Eldhraun lava fields and the beautiful sea-rock formations of Dyrholaey. You'll find fascinating needle rock formations and very active bird cliffs. (The campground and guest cabins at Vik are dramatically situated at the foot of one of the bird cliffs.) It's worthwhile to stop in town and stroll down to the sea and watch the brilliant white waves breaking over a black-sand beach of crushed volcanic lava.
While in Vik, explore the small farms at Skogar. In addition to the farms, there is an open-air folk museum with exhibits on the traditions, history and mythology of the region. Nearby are the Myrdalsjokull and Eyarfjordurjokull glaciers.
